AME inhibits the expansion and translocation of Enterobacteriaceae in vivo. A Bacterial community bar plot analysis of Proteobacteria on the family level. B 16S rRNA gene sequencing result of Enterobacteriaceae . C 16S rRNA gene sequencing result of <t>E.</t> <t>coli</t> . D Real-time qPCR result of Enterobacteriaceae . E Numbers of Enterobacteriaceae CFUs cultivated from feces on the day before mice sacrifice. The numbers 10 −1 and 10 −4 represent the bacterial suspension was diluted to tenfold and 10,000-fold cultured on MacConkey agar plate, respectively. F Mucin layer (green) and intestinal bacteria (red) in the colon were stained using anti-MUC2 antibody and EUB 338 probe (scale bar = 50 μm). The upper images were taken at 20 × magnification. The lower images were taken at 60 × magnification. G Mucin layer (green) and Enterobacteriaceae (red) in the colon were stained using anti-MUC2 antibody and ENTER 1432 probe (scale bar = 50 μm). The upper images were taken at 20 × magnification. The lower images were taken at 60 × magnification. H Numbers of Enterobacteriaceae CFUs cultivated from mesenteric lymph nodes. I Numbers of Enterobacteriaceae CFUs cultivated from spleen. n = 5–7 ( A – D , H – I ), n = 3–4 ( E – G ) per group. Data are expressed as mean ± SEM, * P < 0.05, ** P < 0.01, *** P < 0.001, and **** P < 0.0001. P values derived from one-way ANOVA analysis

Article Snippet: To further elucidate the pathogenic role of Enterobacteriaceae , we used a previously isolated Escherichia coli ( E. coli ) strain EL-8 (which displayed 100% sequence identity with E. coli O157:H7 ATCC 43894 ) from IBD mouse feces in our laboratory and performed continuous colonization (1 × 10 9 CFU/mouse) for 10 days in DSS-induced colitis mice to evaluate its effect on colonic inflammation (Fig. S1A).
